All Semester Sixteen

Hey guys,

So this semester has been ok some ups and downs here and there, but overall I can't complain. I've been wanting to come back to school so bad and when I finally did, it felt like a rollercoaster ride. However, I can't complain! I had a chance to work on amazing projects, learn new things, work on things that meant the most to me and just add new experiences to my list. Photography was great, I'm glad I got to sit with friends and go through each project together and seeing what everyone came up with and what things meant to them was fun! I hope everyone had a bit of fun making things your own. You never know what you can come up with until you try. Ending this semester tired, yet, content and ready to relax until Spring! I wish everyone a great Holiday. See you soon!

Surviving Sickle Cell Anemia...Personal Project

Hey Y'all,
So excited to share this project with you. This was an open project that we discussed earlier in the semester about what we wanted to do. I originally had a few ideas in my head about what I wanted to do but things changed as I went through the semester.

So, my final project for the photography class is based on Sickle Cell Anemia. Which is, if you are not aware of the disease, a Chronic blood disorder where the red blood cells are abnormally shaped, or crescent shaped. This makes the cells difficult to travel through the blood vessels. When this occurs, the clogged blood vessels can block blood flow to various, important organs and body parts, such as heart, brain, liver, kidney and spleen. This causes severe painful episodes, or pain crises, which raise the risks to catch various infections. There are several forms of sickle cell disease, and symptoms can vary in form and severity from one person to another, but all include serious pain, fatigue, shortness of breath and  headaches. Sickle Cell Anemia individuals are at a higher risk for health complications such strokes, eye damage, and pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, etc. so working to prevent these problems should be a primary goal for anyone with SCD. Currently, there is no widely available cure for sickle cell disease, so it’s imperative that people with the condition work with their hematologist and healthcare team to manage their symptoms.

Now, that you are a bit enlightened....What I did for my project was gather a bunch of my friends who suffer from Sickle Cell, like myself, and asked them to allow me to take photos of them. At first, it was a little challenging since around this time of year most of us are sick very often. However, eventually I got a photo here and a photo there and as I played around with it I figured out what I wanted to do and how I wanted to present it.

So, I took the photo, which could have been anything my friends associated with SCD, and I had them write something short in their own words about what Surviving Sickle Cell meant to them. Here is what they had to say and here are my final images....

Originally, I just had the image I enhanced with words in Photoshop, which I loved...it made the point! However, for this blog I decided to add a photo of each friend, including myself, to show that this disease is not always recognized or visible to people around us...in other words, If you saw me but didn't know me, you wouldn't know I was sick!
People don't understand what we go through, sometimes on a daily basis, and honestly we understand that most people aren't aware of SCD. However, this is what this project was for, to shed some light on a disease that a lot of people don't hear about or see, and bring awareness to as many people as possible. Now it is up to you to continue spreading the word and bring awareness to others. Help my friends and I shed the light so that one day, my child or yours, could live a life free of this disease!

Thank you!
Bree

This Equals That...?

So this project was called "This Equals That."For this we had to shoot, find or use images from previous assignments to create two images side by side that show equivalents...from an aesthetic, or conceptual point of view. Here are some ideas that I have come up with. Hope you all find them as intriguing as I have.

Camera Less Image

Hey guys,

So this project was also done earlier on in the semester, It was our Camera less Images. We took a bunch of different unique, some apparent, items and laid them on the photo glass itself without film and took pictures of the items creating different beautiful, abstract photos. Then we chose our favorite ones and worked with them on Photoshop to create an even more detailed photo. My photo collection for this project is called Space Jam. I put a group of things out and just played around with them until I felt like I was satisfied with what I made and then I added color to them using Photoshop. Here are some of my favorite...

Pretty cool huh? Let me know if you can guess the objects I used to make these camera less images. Should be fun trying to figure it out!!

What does image sound like?

Hey yall,
So here is a project we worked on earlier in the semester called "What does image sound like". Basically we had to gather or take photographs of things that explore the sense of sound in their image. For instance, this was an example our Professor, Sally Matthew, gave us.

Suzanne Dworsky, Sea Breeze, Cape Cod, MA, 1978 © Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Now I did a few different things to try and fulfill this task. At first try I went a bit more literal, trying to find things that made a definite sound. Then as i played around with images and photos my mind started to become more creative in my approach.

In the end this is what I came up with.

It's a windshield wiper. What I've done is give the windshield wiper a voice, and it is telling the story. Then using Photoshop I wrote the story on the windshield following the flow of rain and the wiper.

This is the story...
"It rained that day...I sat stiffened, looking out the glass as I thought about how much I'd have to clean, the thought of moving back and forth was so exhausting. We sat, people passed, car lights flashed and it rained. I thought about how clean it had been before...Before it rained, how the water splashed and the soap slushed and how happy she was. But it rained...! Why, why would it rain. Nothing to shield her, not even the trees would protect her, the wind threw things at her, other cars splashed her and her squeaky-clean frame left tarnished. How will we see? How will others look at us? Ooooh, the work that had to be done, the movement back and forth, the spots wiped away, the sound of me squeaking left then right, the rubber leaving streaks then making a trip back to collect them again. It rained, and I'm tired...but the job has to be done. She pulls off, and pulls down the handle...Heeree I Gooo!! Squeeeeak! Thud! Squeeak! Thud! SQUEEEEAK!! THUD! Sliding across the windshield to that rhythm, making an awfully, yet, amusing song in the wind...Oh wait! Who am I? I'm her windshield wiper for her car. "

A bit about me....

Hey everyone,

So here’s a little about me. My name is Brittany Davidson…well just call me Bre, that’s what I’m best known as, I’m 25 years young and I intend to stay as youthful as possible. I’m an Art major and CT minor at York Community College. I am a walking advocate for Sickle Cell Anemia…if you aren’t sure what that is, as most people aren’t, you can google it or stay tuned for little post here and there about it on my Blog. Basically, this page would be a miniature portfolio of all the photographs ive cooked up this year and a snippet of what goes on in my head from time to time. Which can be a bit all over sometimes…so hang on! Honestly, you won’t survive a day in my shoes if you can’t survive an hour in my head.

My motto is to be as creative and free as possible,  just live life to the best of your ability….Life is too SHORT to be tucked away in a box collecting dust. Enjoy life to the fullest!
